Minor Modifications

Even if you are only considering minor modifications, the regulations are still very clear on what can and cannot be done to your vehicle. According to the Queensland Department of Transport, minor modifications are defined as including the addition of optional equipment or alterations to a vehicle while still remaining within the specification of the car’s manufacturer. These modifications do not push the vehicle outside of the compliance with heavy vehicle standards.

Minor modifications may include:

  • Adding lighting to your vehicle
  • Aerials
  • Air conditioning modifications
  • Alarm system additions
  • Installation of plastic shields for lamps and windscreens
  • Wheel and tyre options provided that they do not affect the rating of the vehicle when it comes to the Gross Vehicle Mass or Gross Combination Mass

Modifications Requiring Approval

More complex modifications are where it’s even more important to get the job done right. If these aren’t done right, it puts you and the others on the road at major risk. This type of modification is typically defined as significant or extensive. They have the potential to affect the design of your vehicle, its pull-power or strength, its structural integrity and the handling of the vehicle. Any modification of this type needs specific approval from the Queensland Department of Transport, something we’re more than happy to handle for you!

Knowing the difference between major and minor modifications enables you to make sure your vehicle is as up to code as it should be. Don’t get bogged down in the details, bring your vehicle into Stewart & Sons Engineering and allow us to take care of following the regulations as set out by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
